Between the World and Me “But race is the child of racism, not the father.” (7) The idea or definition of race is not clear since people do not understand its origins and it is difficult to find real ways to address it. “Through the windshield I saw the mark of these ghettos - the abundance of beauty shops, churches, liquor stores, and crumbling housing - and I felt the old fear. Through the windshield I saw the rain coming down in sheets.” (152) Cotes doesn’t end the book on a positive note, reminding us of the unfair way blacks live and seems to hint towards the fact that it will not change. “so that America might justify itself, the story of a black body's destruction must begin with his or her error, real or imagined…” (96) He explains how each time a black american is shot or beaten America tends to look at his faults first. What he did to deserve what happened to him. He discusses that the police who beat them are not held accountable.

Essay 3 Reflection

1 . What did you learn about the research process that was new to you? Of all the types of sources you found, from popular to scholarly to primary, which was most fruitful or interesting? For me the whole research process was new. I have never really done one before this. I found it to be very difficult, especially the formatting of the essay. I found my popular source to be most interesting, I think you will too!  2. What did you learn about the writing process of your partner in the Peer Draft workshop? How did their process and the way they put their ideas together differ from yours? (Even if you had no draft yet, how did your discussion with the other person teach you something? My peer did not have a draft yet, but it was interesting to discuss how she was going to structure her essay. As it always is. It gave me ideas and helped me to form mine as well. She was a lot more organized than I was in the beginning.  3. What is one part of your essay ...

How do the Homeless people of San Francisco have a negative or positive impact on the city and its people? Source 1:  http://sfist.com/2017/06/26/2017_san_francisco_homeless_census.php ~STATISTICS "In 2016, the call line 311 received five times as many calls about homeless encampments, discarded hypodermic needles, and human waste as it did in 2015." ~walking the streets of San Fran I have seen the waste and needles first hand, this is a big problem what would happen if a small child were to get ahold of one of those needles and develop a disease?  ~Homelessness in San Francisco has actually decreased slightly over the years which is awesome, however the adult population of homeless people has not. And these are the people you actually see when you walk around the city so even though statistically it really has dropped it doesn't look that way at all.  ~Contrary to popular beliefs, 69% of the population of homeless people actually state they lived in San Fran...

Intrinsic Motivation in Kohn's Article. Katya Bacani, Ryan Floyd, Aly Zuasola, Isaac

Kohn describes intrinsic motivation by stating that when children are invited to ask questions, it inspires them to find answers which leads to enthusiasm. In this process, as the students are asking and answering their questions, teachers are able to encourage and aid in finding what the students are interested in. Duckworth claims,  "b y inviting  their  questions, we unleash the power of intrinsic motivation because all of us tend to develop more enthusiasm for, and ultimately become more skillful at, pursuing questions about which we’re genuinely curious than those handed to us by someone else." ( Whose Asking,   par. 2)  Through this quotation it is clear that with intrinsic motivation comes a student and teacher participation. In order to be inspired, it is essential that the student is always thinking of ways to question in order to in turn, find the answer to their curiosity. To conclude, Kohn utilizes a dependent teacher student interaction in...

I value this picture because I love my parents. This was taken when we were all much younger (obviously lol) but I think it captures my parents personalities very well. My mom is a very happy outgoing woman and my dad is more kept to himself, he's a very intimidating guy.    This picture is important to me because it is a picture of me with my softball team at Arizona State university. This is the first college I ever went and visited. It was after this visit with my teammates that I decided I wanted to play college softball. And I decided playing at a school as big as ASU is not what I wanted, I wanted a much smaller school that would feel like home to me.   This picture is important to me because these are my siblings. And although we fight and don't always get along since I have moved far from home, I have realized that they are the two people I have come to miss the most. Me and Alexis both chose pictures of our families and siblings, but ...
Essay 2
This last week I have done a really bad job with time management. I have been falling behind in my math assignments. I have also been struggling a little with this essay, It's been my most difficult write this year so far. I need to set more time aside to work on it and really put in a good effort to perfect it. I feel my rough draft is just that, rough. Besides my poor time management I have done a pretty good job with the workshops, so far I have only missed two. We do 5am workouts so I really struggle with getting up on time to get to the workshops, but I find them to be helpful for the most part so I will definitely be attending the required amount to receive full credit. I felt the Call to Action day was kind of eh. All I had to do was make goody bags for the elementary students that came down to visit us, during the actual activities I found myself to be useless and extremely bored because I had already completed my job.

I did a project in High School where we had to choose a group of nonconformists and how they played a part in how the world is the way it is now, I chose the beat movement and City Lights is a book store based off of this movement. Kinda funny how I am from Idaho and I'm now here in this City its a small world.

Tea Paragraph: Nathan Ryan Emoni Jake / Between The World And Me

As a group we feel this book is going to cover what it is like to be a black man in today's society. We also feel he is going to take on the topic of white supremacy. On page seven of the book he goes into racism and defines it for us as "...the need to ascribe bone-deep features to people and then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them-..." (7). Racism alone is a huge factor in our world today that constantly seems to be causing problems, Ta-Nehisi Coates has dove in to show us his experiences in just the first few pages. This is important because we have already seen what we will be reading about throughout the entire book.

Why I am the way I am? ~ I believe I am a very honest writer. Words don't flow for me like those who write books and make millions off of the way they put words together. But I am very real, and my writing reflects that.   (pg. 24) Diabetes/ My little brother being diagnose with diabetes and the struggle he and my family had to overcome  Softball/ Huge part of my life and who I am today High School Basketball/ quitting after my sophomore year to focus on softball year round  Player of the Year/ Losing an award I worked for my entire high school career by one vote to a player on another team My Grandma/ my grandma has been my third parent when my dad couldn't be around Stem Cell Research/ I did my senior research project on stem cells and the controversy about it. Really helped me discover what I want to do with my life. Becoming a CNA/ working in the ER during my senior year and getting a job at a nursing home. Really taught me lot abo...

Dear Richard E. Miller and Ann Jurecic,               (Ryan, Katie, Ollie, & Alex) We predict this book will be composed of multiple essays to help you explore creativity and open up as a writer to help structure your own work. We are expecting to see a lot of different styles of writing throughout the book. ~ Will we use this book to look at the essays in it as examples and/or inspiration?  ~ "We've designed Habits of the Creative Mind to be read cover to cover or to be dipped into or out of at will."       Q. Will we be reading it cover to cover for this class or will we be skipping around the book?  ~"Instead, we've written a collection of essays to guide you in learning how to use writing as a technology for thinking new thoughts ."                Q. How will they apply to/or help us with our essays? Like essay 3. The topic is "What critical questions do you have...

My name

My name is Ryan Floyd, I'm from Mountain Home, Idaho. My dad wanted a boy and my mom liked the name Ryan. My middle name is Ann, after my grandma. She played a huge roll in my life when I was growing up at home. My dad was a BLM firefighter and would be gone months at a time so she was like my third parent.
